Terminal Modernization

Significant Growth, Growing Terminal Needs

The Alexander Field-South Wood County Airport (ISW) in Wisconsin Rapids has seen significant growth the last ten years, largely driven the success of the Sand Valley Golf Resort in Rome, Wisconsin. This transformation has elevated the airport's importance for travel and economic activity in the region.

The Airport has seen an increase nearing 600% in jet traffic since the Sand Valley Golf Resort opened in 2017. To accommodate the rising number of visitors, in 2016, the airport requested federal and state funding, which allowed $4 million to be earmarked for infrastructure projects at ISW. The airport used the funds to expand the apron in 2018, nearly tripling its previous size and providing more space for larger jets, as well as constructing a 13,200 square foot transient hangar. These initial expansion projects have been crucial in meeting the growing demand.

With continued growth, the airport is once again planning to improve the infrastructure. The airport now plans to modernize and rehabilitate its terminal building, which was originally built in the 1970s.

The planned terminal modernization will further enhance the airport's capabilities and support continued growth. This commitment to improvement underscores the airport's role as a vital gateway to the region and ensures it can continue to serve the increasing number of visitors and residents alike.

Enhancing Terminal Space to Meet Growing Needs

The current terminal space no longer aligns with the evolving needs and usage demands of its diverse visitors. Planned updates will improve capacity, circulation, and efficiency, while also introducing a new pilot lounge, flight planning facilities, and modern meeting spaces to better serve all airport users.

Replacing Aging Infrastructure

Renovating the existing space to provide updated facility rooms will ensure a more reliable, efficient, and accessible traveling experience for a growing community.

ADA Compliance and Accessibility

The terminal building assessment highlighted the need for ADA and accessible enhancements, including renovated restrooms, improved entrances, vertical circulation availability, and better signage for accessible facilities.

Improved Energy Efficiency with American-Made Solutions

The airport's energy efficiency will be significantly enhanced through the implementation of modern HVAC systems, energy-saving lighting, and local materials. By prioritizing the use of American-made materials and cutting-edge technologies, the project supports national energy independence and infrastructure development. These improvements will reduce the airport's carbon footprint and operational costs while contributing to the nation's energy goals.
